Medical Information

Before you leave make sure that your medical insurance has coverage overseas. If that is not the case you will need additional insurance since the Spanish Social Security system can only offer treatment in the event of an emergency. If you are taking any medication it is recommended that you carry a letter from your doctor stating your prescription and dosage.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies usually open from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm and 4:30-8:00 pm, though in the bigger cities a certain number remain open 24 hours. There is a listing displayed outside pharmacies and published in the daily press, indicating wich of them are on night-service and/or open during the weekend.

Pets

Tourists deciding to come to Spain with pets should find out about the
current laws, which are similar to those in other European countries.

If you travel with pets, you will need an international certificate of origin and health.
Dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies. You must show the vaccination record and veterinary certificates as proof of this. Generally, these certificates have a time limit,
therefore you should check to see if they cover the holiday you have planned. Once in
Spain, remember that pets are not allowed in many places, such as in most restaurants, for example.
Likewise, it is wise to ring the hotel before reserving a room to find out whether or not pets are permitted.

When travelling by plane, pets must be checked in as baggage and you must pay the excess baggage fee. They usually travel in the hold of the aircraft, in a suitable container or box. Pets must be identified by a microchip or tattoo to assist in locating them in the event of theft or
loss. This identification is obligatory in all European Union countries.
It is also advisable to bring a muzzle for dogs, since these
are required in many autonomous regions.

To avoid any unpleasant surprises with your pet, you should have it checked by a veterinarian
before travelling, and ensure that it is healthy and clean. Finally, it is useful to have on hand the emergency veterinary telephone number of the town you are visiting.
